Comment [Brett]: Many Christians celebrate Pentecost Sunday as the birthday of the church, the day the Holy Spirit fell upon many people who had gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the JEWISH Pentecost. But until that day, Christ’s closest disciples knew only that they were to stay in the city until they were “clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49).

Message [Brett]: The Holy Spirit, sometimes described as the love (that is, the love relationship) between God the Father and God the Son, has been given to all who desire to receive this gracious gift. Pentecost, originally a Jewish festival of harvest and later a Jewish celebration of God’s law, is now a celebration of God’s life, God’s love, God’s wisdom, God’s motivation (that which moves us to do right things), God’s desire to include us in the love between the Father and the Son. We are called to encourage one another, to look for the Spirit in ourselves and in others, to test all things, and to hold fast to all that is good. As we do so, we find we have great reason to “rejoice always” (1 Thes 5:16).
