17 AMAZING GRACE

Message [Brett]: Scripture informs us that “the rich and the poor have a common bond - the Lord is the Maker of them all” (Prov 22:2). Scripture also reminds us that God has placed a “portion of eternity” in each person’s heart (Eccl 3:11). True friendships are founded upon these parcels of common ground and upon the “portions of eternity” we carry within us - that is, the desire our God has placed within each of us to reach outside of ourselves. True friendships, with people and with God, require the “gladly, yes” work of guarding our hearts against deception, against selfishness that results in our blaming others, and against jealousy - things that hinder us and harm our relationships. Instead, we need to cultivate faithfulness, humility, and adaptability (a willingness to be transformed). These latter attitudes contribute to MAKING, rather than BREAKING, relationships.
